Project Management

Project management is the control of projects. It is the way projects are organized, prepared, planned, executed and completed.

The following steps are generally followed in project management:

• Starting the project
• Determing of the size / scope of the project
• Planning of the project
• Division of the project into different phases and / or sub-projects
• Implementation of the activities (and sub-projects) in the various phases
• Measuring the project progress
• Termination, possible reporting or delivery of another project product

There are several project management methods and models, including:

• IPMA
• PRINCE2
• PMBoK (Standard-No methode)
• PM²
• Projectmatig werken (Dutch)
• Projectmatig creëren (Dutch)

In ICT there are all kinds of project management methods that focus on software development:

• Agile
• DSDM
• RUP
• Scrum
• SDM

Despite the different methods, there are also similarities in the characteristics of a project:

• Starting a project is a choice.
• The project is justified.
• A project is unique and new.
• A project is a temporary organization.
• A project has one executive and one project manager.
• A project produces a result.
• The project result contributes to a higher goal.
• A project is demarcated, time and resources are limited.
• A project has a beginning and an end.

Projects are timeless. Whether it's a constructed railway line, a migrated IT system or a restored museum, it takes time and money. Regardless of the type of project, an effective project management method is essential to success.

Everyone is sometimes active in a project, consciously and unconsciously. We may not recognize a project very quickly and we tend to see only the major infrastructural jobs that are happening around us as a project.
